My loved one is coming home

At Operation Resurge, we stand with young people returning from incarceration—offering more than just advocacy. We provide hands-on support to help them rebuild their lives, reconnect with their communities, and avoid the cycle of re-incarceration.

We offer individualized support such as: job search assistance, mentorship, help accessing mental health support, educational opportunities, and general guidance. We walk alongside each young person, empowering them with the tools, resources, and relationships they need to succeed.

Our ultimate goal is to support successful re-entry and long-term stability—helping loved ones stay out of the justice system and thrive in their communities.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN IT'S TIME TO COME HOME

Coming home after incarceration can be challenging, but careful planning, determination and support   can lead to successful transitions.   Below are steps that can help you build a strong foundation for a successful reentry. Remember, it’s essential to seek help when needed, remain focused on your goals, and stay committed to making positive changes in your life.

Develop a Plan Before Release

  • Set Goals: Define clear, realistic short-term and long-term goals for life post-release.
  • Immediate Areas for Focus:

                       -  Understand release requirements

                       -  Secure Identification

                       -  Secure Housing

                       -  Utilize reentry programs

Connect with Support Networks

  • Family and Friends: Reconnect with supportive family and friends who can provide emotional and practical assistance.
  • Mentorship Programs: Engage with mentorship programs that offer guidance and resources.
  • Support Groups: Join support groups relevant to your individual needs where you can share experiences and gain support.

Prioritize Employment

  • Job Training Programs: Consider participating in job training and vocational programs to enhance your skills.
  • Employment Agencies: Consider working with employment agencies that specialize in helping formerly incarcerated individuals find jobs.
  • Network: Leverage personal and professional networks to learn about job opportunities.
  • Honesty: Be honest with potential employers about your background when appropriate and focus on your skills and qualifications.

Continue Education

  • GED and High School Diplomas: If you haven’t completed high school, consider obtaining a GED or other alternative education programs.
  • Community College: Explore community college courses or vocational training programs.
  • Scholarships and Grants: Apply for scholarships and grants.

Focus on Health and Wellness

  • Physical Health: Schedule regular medical check-ups and follow a healthy lifestyle.
  • Mental Health: Counseling or therapy are good options to help address any mental health issues and to help cope with the transition.
  • Substance Abuse Programs: If necessary, participate in substance abuse treatment programs.

Build a Positive Social Life

  • Community Involvement: Get involved in community activities, volunteer work, or local organizations.
  • Positive Relationships: Build relationships with positive, supportive individuals who encourage your growth and success.
  • Recreational Activities: Engage in hobbies and recreational activities that bring joy and fulfillment.

Stay Persistent and Resilient

  • Patience: Understand that reentry is a process that takes time and persistence.
  • Adaptability: Be open to adapting your plans and strategies as needed.
  • Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they feel.
